Who can be a Police Unity Tour Member?
Membership to this organization shall be open to all full or part time law enforcement officers, whether active or retired. Civilians 18 years of age, or older, who are employed or affiliated with law enforcement agencies and related organizations or possess specific training or skills required to safely and effectively assist the organization may apply. These requirements include, but are not limited to: dispatchers, first aid personnel, doctors, nurses, lawyers, mechanics (automobile & bicycle) and members of organizations such as the Concerns of Police Survivors, Domestic Violence Response Teams.
What are the dates of the ride?
Chapter 37 leaves the WTC site on bicycles on May 9th and ride through until May 12th. The Candlelight Vigil is on May 13th.
How much does it cost to participate?
Each member, rider and support, must raise a mininum of $1750.00. New riders are required to have $500.00 in sponsorships in within 30 days of their acceptance into the Police Unity Tour. All donations are tax deductible.
Where does my money go?
Of the $1750.00 each member raises, $1000.00 is your donation toward the National Law Enforcement Memorial and Museum. The remainder is utilized in operating the Tour. This may appear to be a lot of money to participate but there are considerable expenses, which are incurred as a result of this venture i.e. hotels, insurance, food, supplies etc. Since our inception we have risen nearly $10 million dollars for the N.L.E.O.M.F. and are nationally recognized as the largest private/corporate sponsor.
What safety equipment do I need to participate?
All bicycle riders MUST wear a helmet and eye protection at all times, riding gloves are optional but recommended.
What do I need to wear while on the Police Unity Tour?
All riders must wear a PUT jersey everyday and black riding shorts/pants. All support personnel must wear a blue support shirt everyday and black shorts/pants.
How far is the route?
The route begins for Chapter 37 New York at the World Trade Center and then proceeds to Washington D.C. The mileage is approximately 300 miles. The ride is covered over 4 days, with days 2 and 3 consisting of about 100 miles each day.
What is the pace?
You should train or be comfortable riding approximately 12 - 15 miles per hour, for at least 25 miles with hills. You will be expected to ride slower and faster than that at times. Hill training SHOULD be part of your preparation routine.
How do I get home from Washington DC?
Each rider is responsible for making their own return travel arrangements, including their luggage and bicycles. Anyone who is having difficulty finding a ride should speak to a member of the Chapter 37 executive board to coordinate your return.
